The 21st century is the era of invention and progress. This period is all about development and achieving the goals that fulfill every need of mankind. The modern concept of sustainable development is derived mostly from the 1987 Brundtland report, it is a blend of ideas about sustainable forest management and twenty-first-century environmental concerns. Although with time the concept got polarised towards economic development, social development, and environmental protection for the upcoming generation, the very meaning of the term is mankind’s aim to achieve the goal of human-ecosystem equilibrium. The concept has undergone a considerable amount of criticism for decades now. The idea has been constantly subjected to repeated scrutiny. The word at its core means the development that meets the need of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
As the world faces a tremulous time, be it this calamitous pandemic, climate change, biodiversity loss, or conflict over resource scarcity we need to evaluate the need for sustainability or sustainable development more now. The sustainable development goals need to be the bedrock of every business or economic plan to efface poverty inclusively while protecting the environment. Every business or startups big or small needs to embrace the sustainable development goals and strategize their business accordingly. The fast fashion industry is one of the central polluting industries in the world. Besides their harmful clothing production process, these dominating fashion lines are eclipsing the beauty of Indigenous fashion, its traditional lineage, and ethnicity. Thankfully several fashion brands are showing awareness on this issue by relying on the eco-friendly production method, sustainable dying, recycling materials, and promoting the indigenous fashion industry and the associated artisans(workers).
In 2020, the world woke up to a catastrophic pandemic-COVID-19, that swept across the globe like a curse killing people, crippling the economy, and affecting human lives in all possible ways. Its time that mankind response to their duty and responsibility towards nature and each other. This pandemic has affected the vulnerable sections of society mostly. Its time that we stand beside these people who have lost their livelihood. Let us develop a more fair and ideal society for our future generations.
